Cyber Threat Information Analysis and Sharing System


System to comprehensively analyze and share information on cyber threats and security incidents
Customer Profile
The customer is a semi-government organization dedicated to the protection of the Internet and information, invigoration of online services and international cooperation for related field.

Business Challenge
As cyber-attacks (e.g., malicious codes or viruses) spread through the Internet, there came a need to take a national response to the cyber threats and security incidents. To this end, our customer wanted to establish a national-level system. The major goals of this project are as follows.

- Establishing a system that can profile information about cyber threats and security incidents and analyze linkage
- A need to collect, analyze and share information on cyber-attacks comprehensively to quickly respond to the security incidents and prevent damages from spreading further


Mobigen Solution
Mobigen was selected as the main contractor for the project and established a system that enables systematic nationwide management of large-scale cyber-attacks and notification of ongoing situation to each relevant organization, thereby preventing the spread of the attacks.

- Collecting data not only from the systems of client’s in-house divisions but also more than 100 security-related external systems operated by many different companies and institutions(e.g., antivirus software makers, controlling agencies and ISP)
- Conducting profiling on cyber threats and security incidents based on IRIS, Mobigen’s big data platform
- Analyzing on similar cases through correlated analysis about the collected data and providing notification function
- Making visualization on malicious codes and security incidents
- Sending information to the systems of hundreds of external organizations


Business Value
The newly-established system through this project offers an environment that can comprehensively analyze track records of cyber-attacks and all the information on when, where and how the cyber criminals made an access to the servers.

This system was designed to make an early response to cyber-attacks and prevent spread of damages through comprehensive data analysis and sharing. With this system in place, our customer could get a full picture of the information on the threats, which used to be gathered separately by various systems. Moreover, this system classified threat information by types, sent and shared them to external institutions.

With an establishment of the ‘System to Analyze and Share Cyber Threats and Information,’ users came to understand the overall situation about various cyber terrors and security incidents. By identifying signs of possible threats, they could greatly reduce damages from cyber terrors.




Comprehensive Billing Analysis and Verification


An innovative alternative to increase capacity of existing data warehouse and improve performance at super-low cost
Customer Profile
The client is a Korea’s tier-1 mobile service provider that boasts approximately 30 million subscribers across the country. It actively responds to evolution of mobile communication network technologies such as 2G CDMA, CDMA 2000 1X, EV-DO, WCDMA, HSDPA networks, while offering nationwide mobile services. Since commercialization of 4G LTE network in 2011, the company has been playing a leading role in settling mobile broadband services through an early supply of nationwide network.

Business Challenge
The client company used to develop and run a billing data analysis system on a basis of pricey data warehouse solutions provided by an overseas solution vendor. However, due to an increase in the number of 3G and 4G LTE subscribers together with an explosive data traffic, it saw an inflow of enormous data exceeding processing capacity that was designed at an early stage. The situation made the system less stable and available, requiring a need to extend processing capacity with expensive systems as soon as possible.

Mobigen Solution
Instead of increasing capacity of the existing system at high cost, the client selected IRIS, a big data database solution for processing and analyzing massive data. With the introduction of IRIS, the client has significantly saved costs by replacing some of heavy-load processes that are currently done by the existing data warehouse system. Moreover, it could maximize system performance by transferring the following functions to IRIS for faster processing—storage/search of raw data (also known as primary data) and inquiry/analysis services. The major tasks carried out by IRIS in this project are as follows.

- Compressing roughly 60 billion log data records per day and store them after the data replication
- Creating indexes and tables of data on a real-time basis
- Real-time search of three months’ amount of data (nearly 5 trillion records, 1.5PB)n


Business Value
This project was to increase extra capacity at low cost within several months by adopting Mobigen's IRIS. The project was successful as it also improved operational efficiency of the existing system through effective sharing of roles between the existing system and IRIS.





Integrated Log Analysis System


Strengthening IT governance through log analysis on financial companies’ entire IT system
Customer Profile
The client is the largest multinational insurance company in Korea, providing various financial products including property insurance policies and total financial services. Moreover, it is expanding sales base of indemnity insurance plans targeting local residents and corporate customers through 7 overseas affiliates in the U.S, the U.K., Japan and some other countries.

Business Challenge
The client maintains and operates more than 100 different IT systems to better serve individual and corporate customers in product sales and follow-up service. However, it faced difficulties in measuring performance on IT system investment and efficiency. Due to lack of data needed to grasp efficiency of business activities and utilization status of each system, it was not able to come up with any measures for improvement.

- A need for integrated management of massive log data
- A need for providing an environment that enables tracking the progress of system status for efficient operation of an IT system
- A need for quick search on massive log data
- A need for logging online transaction records and strengthening supervision


Mobigen Solution
The client decided to adopt IRIS, Mobigen’s big data processing platform after performing a benchmark test on a foreign product and IRIS.

IRIS provides an environment that allows systematic management of IT investment efficiency by gathering and processing nearly 1 TB(100 million records) of log data per day in a real-time basis. The features of the solution offered to the client are as follows.


- Managing status of the use of IT resources through a dashboard and report of IT system utilization
- Optimizing IT resources (e.g., system relocation and dismantlement) through an analysis about usage and usage patterns based on each system
- Storing security logs designed to prevent customer data leak and tracking
- Promptly supporting business through a high-speed search of massive log data


Business Value
The client successfully established the “Integrated Log Analysis System” through IRIS and could build up a basis to bolster security (e.g., customer data leak) and preemptively curb service interruption stemming from insufficient resources.

- Laying the groundwork for measuring efficiency of IT system investment and business effects

Analytics Platform Based on Big Data for Utilities


Providing a basis to create value through analysis of electricity big data
Customer Profile
The client is a comprehensive utility company that performs development, generation, transmission, transformation and distribution of electric power. It is supplying electric energy in accordance with type of customers for home, industrial, residential, educational and agricultural use. Notably, the company has been contributing to economic development as it strives to ensure stable supply of energy by continuously investing in development/application of researches and systems and improving electric power grid and relevant systems amid technological advancement such as Smart Grid.

Business Challenge
The client decided to conduct a project to establish electricity big data analysis platform, in a bid to create new business of the power industry and deliver differentiated customer service through electricity big data. The major goals of this project are as follows.

- Establishing long-term, Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) database
- Offering consulting on energy use such as saving bills by analyzing energy consuming patterns of each customer, and eventually encouraging voluntary management of energy demand
- Stabilizing supply of electricity through a forecast of energy demand


Mobigen Solution
In this project, Mobigen laid the groundwork for creating new value by the use of electricity big data, while collecting high-and low-voltage AMI data, meteorological information, customer and billing information for big data analysis

- Establishing big data platform based on Hadoop by using Mobigen's IRIS Enterprise Hadoop solution
- Installing advanced analytics engine for time-series prediction
- Conducting time-series analysis based on weather and season models by using electricity big data, and realizing various additional services based on predicting models for hourly electricity usage


Business Value
This project successfully paved the way for creation of new business in the power industry and enhanced customer satisfaction by offering them differentiated analysis and consulting on energy use.

- Providing an environment that allows voluntary and rational management of demand through an analysis and prediction on customer-based consumption patterns. By doing so, the client can prevent excessive electricity consumption and reduce electricity charges.
- Contributing to establishing a stable basis for electricity supply through enhanced precision in electricity demand prediction






LTE Network Data Analysis


Integrated monitoring and analysis on quality of 4G LTE service
Customer Profile
The client is a telecommunication operator that provides wired and wireless communications service. The company commercialized 4G LTE service for the first time in Korea and expanded the service across the nationwide network after making aggressive investment to secure subscribers.

Business Challenge
To gain a competitive edge on quality competition in the early stage of 4G LTE service, the client company decided to introduce a system that can monitor quality of the service based on every single customer call in near real time and analyze quality of LTE network. The major requests from the client are as follows.

- Analyzing service quality to stabilize network quality at the early stage of 4G LTE service
- Managing quality based on EPC call flows
- Monitoring and analyzing nationwide network quality in near real time
- Backing up flexible scalability in preparation for possible increase in traffic


Mobigen Solution
The 4G LTE network quality analysis system established through this project set up a system using IRIS, Mobigen’s massive big data DB solution, as a basis platform. This was to achieve quality management of network and service by using massive data of the client's network. The IRIS is helping the client maintain best network quality and gain a competitive edge by offering the functions below.

Big Data-Based Wireless Network Performance Analysis System


Providing big data analytics capabilities to establish intelligent RAN

The client is a Korea’s tier-1 mobile service provider that boasts approximately 30 million subscribers across the country. It actively responds to evolution of mobile communication network technologies such as 2G CDMA, CDMA 2000 1X, EV-DO, WCDMA, HSDPA networks, while offering nationwide mobile services. Since commercialization of 4G LTE network in 2011, the company has been playing a leading role in settling mobile broadband services through an early supply of nationwide network.

Business Challenge
The client has already introduced a system that enables monitoring end-to-end service quality from customer perspective and analyzing network-wide performance as it established an all IP-based 4G LTE network. However, it felt the growing need to establish a system that can be harnessed for operation and optimization of radio access network by analyzing the performance more in detail. This was because of the characteristics of 4G LTE network that has a full mesh structure between RAN and core network. The major requests from the client are as follows.

- Identifying abnormal traffic and performance degradation at radio access network in real time
- Analyzing root cause on abnormal conditions
- Establishing knowledge DB for optimizing RAN performance


Mobigen Solution
The client adopted IRIS, Mobigen’s massive DB solution, as a big data platform for wireless network that will not only collect data but also process, store and analyze those data. This was to provide operational support specialized for 4G LTE service. Based on IRIS, the company achieved the stabilization of LTE wireless network and established anomaly mining analysis system.

- Collecting data related to call flow of wireless network in real time
- Setting up big data DB platform to establish knowledge DB
- Providing network intelligence that analyzes performance of wireless network and conducts mining for performance anomaly
- Giving advanced analytics on correlation and prediction

The client is a Korea’s tier-1 mobile service provider that boasts approximately 30 million subscribers across the country. It actively responds to evolution of mobile communication network technologies such as 2G CDMA, CDMA 2000 1X, EV-DO, WCDMA, HSDPA networks, while offering nationwide mobile services. Since commercialization of 4G LTE network in 2011, the company has been playing a leading role in settling mobile broadband services through an early supply of nationwide network.

Business Challenge
The client, a leading LTE service provider in Korea, was running service assurance systems suitable for network structure and service characteristics under systematically-designed short-to long-term plans, in a bid to maintain the current competitive edge and offer high-quality service to customers. However, with technological evolution toward All-IP based 4G LTE network, it came to face several problems as follows.

The existing system has a limit in tracking quality of various services that each customer experiences in using 4G LTE network and another difficulty in identifying root cause of the problems.

- A need to systematically manage objective indicators for service quality
- A need to adopt a new type of solution that can process big data at high speed because of the enormous amount of data to be handled

Costs that will increase significantly with the adoption of a new system
For that reason, the client came to push for the adoption of a new solution that can meet the following demands.

- Real-time monitoring on service quality (e.g., quality of network connection, quality of each application service, etc.) for customers using 4G LTE services
- Analysis on customers affected by quality degradation
- Management on customer experience related to customer VOC
- Intensive monitoring and analysis on quality of VoLTE service


Mobigen Solution
The client came to establish a system that enables monitoring of service quality felt by each individual customer and identifying causes of quality degradation by analyzing packets captured from 4G LTE network through cooperation with Mobigen.

This system enables a real-time processing on more than 100 billion daily call log (xDR) created by the packet data collected from the probe installed in each region.

Tapping into more than 20 years knowhow and experience in mobile communication service, the system offers not only Key Performance Indicator (KPI) from operator’s point of view, but also various quality indicators for customer experience such as Key Quality Indicator (KQI) and Customer Experience Indicator (CEI) from customer’s perspective. By doing so, it provides an environment that allows real-time monitoring on service quality and prompt identification on root causes of service degradation, affected customers and equipment.



Business Value
Through this system, operation staffs of the client came to monitor end-to-end quality in real time and track whether network resources are efficiently used. By responding to customer complaints about quality promptly and properly, the client is realizing customer satisfaction. Moreover, it is harnessing various monitoring/analysis data provided by this system for network operation, engineering and marketing as well. In conclusion, the client is running this system as the core system for company-wide decision making for customer experience.





The Establishment of the WiFi Zone Management System


Remote and centralized management of massive small devices for operating carrier-grade WiFi network
Customer Profile
The client is a Korea’s tier-1 mobile service provider that boasts approximately 30 million subscribers across the country. It actively responds to evolution of mobile communication network technologies such as 2G CDMA, CDMA 2000 1X, EV-DO, WCDMA, HSDPA networks, while offering nationwide mobile services. Since commercialization of 4G LTE network in 2011, the company has been playing a leading role in settling mobile broadband services through an early supply of nationwide network.

Business Challenge
The client is running carrier-grade WiFi network by installing tens of thousands of WiFi Access Points (APs) in certain regions across the nation, in a bid to improve service coverage of certain spaces such as in-building and hot spot.

As the number of smartphone users and demand for WiFi grow at the same time due to widespread 3G and 4G LTE services, the number of WiFi equipment, which has been installed over the past five years, are also increasing substantially. The situation brought about the need to put in place an efficient management system that can save operational costs.


Mobigen Solution
Mobigen’s eManager, which was provided as a base solution for this project, enables integrated management of small equipments (e.g., multi-vendor WiFi AP and Femtocell) installed en masse in many remote areas by using TR-069 standard protocol recommended by Broadband Forum. This solution mainly offers functions as follows.

- Offering real-time monitoring on WiFi equipment malfunction (e.g., errors, delays and interruptions)
- Registering, altering and deleting WiFi equipment and setting information on major parameters
- Defining policy-based work flow and implement it automatically/manually
- Upgrading firmware automatically/manually
- Monitoring performance periodically
- Providing remote diagnosis


Business Value
Through this project, client company could save costs and respond more swiftly to customers through centralized-control of the equipment installed in remote areas

- Saving operational costs significantly through centralized-control, remote of tens of or millions of small equipment installed en masse
- Minimizing service outage time through real-time monitoring on malfunction and remote controlling
- Reinforcing service competitiveness with a prompt response to customers
